I just don’t understand the Facebook and LinkedIn comparisons that I read at least 5 times a day throughout my river of news feed reader. This one is from one of my fav bloggers, Scott Karp…
What if I want to interact with someone on Facebook for business development? Do I have to become their ?Friend? forever? LinkedIn is far better for that.
Don’t get me wrong… I’ve been a long time “user” (I use that term loosely) of LinkedIn (since 2004 or so), but LinkedIn has never provided anything in the way of professional development, career advancement or money making. In the span of 6 months, Facebook has done all three of those things and continues to do so at an exponential rate.
I have 267 contacts on LinkedIn and around 215 friends on Facebook. I stopped asking people to connect with me on LinkedIn a long long time ago (when I was around 50 or so connections), but I still get a couple of requests every week. Occasionally, I’ll accept someone’s request, but it just seems spammy to me.
My Facebook contacts, on the other hand, are all people that I know, do business with, want to do business with, or actively follow on blogs. I’m logged in there throughout the day. I log into my LinkedIn account about twice a month, at best.
I don’t use LinkedIn, I don’t want to use LinkedIn, and it serves no purpose in my life compared to something like Twitter, my email or Facebook.
I just don’t see the comparison or value in LinkedIn. I’m declaring LinkedIn bankruptcy. Sorry if I don’t get back to your question or request for connection. Find me on Facebook instead. Our relationship will be much more productive there.
