The Internet and Google (and Your Possibilities) Are Growing Rapidly

The article linked to here says that (according to Peter Norvig of Google), the internet is growing at a clip of 10-20% per month.  Consider how large the internet already is and do the math.  120 to 240% growth a year is astounding, and I suspect it’s more of a growth curve, meaning that it’s exponential growth rather than arithmetical growth.

Peter Norvig, the director of research at Google, gave an interesting speech about the meaning and power of all of the data that Google is collecting. I was floored by a fact he threw out. His educated guess is that the Internet is the repository of more than 100 trillion words. After the speech, I asked him how much it is growing. He said that it is growing about 10 percent to 20 percent a month. Some parts of it, however, are dying, so the net growth rate is less than that.

Google is making sure to stay as a major hub of this network.  Do the math on the advertising possibilities and that’s astounding as well.

However, this also means that as the amount of growth continues, the expanding volume will mean more traffic for very specific niches.  You don’t have to be one of the Google or Yahoo hubs to monetize your content in a very successful manner.  If you want to make money online (let’s get Jim above John Chow for that anchor text), it takes hard work…. but it can be done.
